World Surf Kayak Championship 2017

Posted by aterrakayak på 01 november 2017

This is something I have wanted to do for a long time. And now it was a pretty close championship in Portrush Ireland. Some friends and I meet up week before in Peniche for some warm up. The plan was from the beginning to pick up my Zenith there, but I bought a new one instead to have less problems with transports. Didnt own my new Ride many days as i sold it to the nice guys from Argentina. Last days in Peniche I catched a cold and on the way to Ireland i was pretty bad, well two days rest should do it…

Might as well say this from the beginning I was surfing bad in all my heats actually. Felt week, nervous and stressed… First heat in Open HP, big nasty waves hard wind and many competitors swimed. I had a rised seat for the first time in my new Zenith and went out just after seeing Tue Olesen do a spectacular fall. Damn got a bit nervous… Well out in the heavy upwind and when the heat is just about to start I felt that the higher seat wont work in these conditions, not the right moment to start with that. Back in and tear of the seat and another heavy paddle out. Oh yes I was tired allready, couldnt even get out and catch anything. Think I got one green start and then nothing…

Day two was a resting day, no waves and that was good for me. Next day in Grand Master it went pretty good i thought but no… So now I have to trust the repechage heat. First Open HP it felt good but again a disaster when I saw the result. This was my best heat and I was sure to be the first, oh no boy right down to the bottom… My last reps in GMHP I was totally of, dont know at all was I was thinking about… embarrassing.

Well its very tight in a competition like this with so many great kayak surfers. Amazing to se what they could do even in like 1-2 foots waves. It was only one day with really good waves. But you have to manage all type of waves offcourse.

Will I do this again? Yes! Offcourse, next WC is in Peru 2019. I hoped I learned something on this event and will train more at home and in Denmark. This is a very difficult sport and thats also whats so fun about it. You will never stop learning.

I have also to say a big thanks to the Dannish team that invited the halfdane (Scania you know). Also thanks to Alberto and Bart for the coaching and fun time in Peniche. Offcourse thanks to the CANI and Portrush team who made the event. And thanks to Hernan Mogade how bought my boat, I know it will get many nice surfs in Argentina.

And of course a super congratulation to David Tetchner who was in the HP final, were he did a impressing performance! Above photo.

The hapiness of surfkayaking!

Aterra Surf kayak weeks Peniche

Posted by aterrakayak på 13 november 2016

Its a windy day and we drive around to find cleaner waves. We park the car on a suprisingly empty parking, though the beach bar seams to be open. Me, Chris, Bart and Mattias walk down to the beach in the lovely sun. Its the fourth spot we check out today, the waves are big, green and looks fantastic. How can it be that we are alone? Well we take a fast descisson that this is a great spot. This is the first day of our traning with World Champion Chris Hobson… Three days training with the best for us who coach down in our courses in Peniche. Oh now i jumped to the second week down there, first week there we had a begginers course…

_x2o5340Photo Robin Sundin

I had two very engaged first time surfers in the course, Åsa and Robin. Åsa is a seakayaker and also do ww kayaking as she lives in Norway and Robin is a seakayaker since two years. He is pretty much a beginner but this guy is a fighter and he is allready more skilled than most of the kayakers i meet. Its all about commitment and both really love to learn new things. I feel it direct when we start the theori, the curious eyes and questions. The lust to come out in the water and feel the speed of the waves. As usuall we start ”in the corner” a perfect spot for beginners. Nice clean 1-2 foot waves gives you a smoth start in the most technique demanding of all paddle sport.

After a few days i see the result of the commitment. Two surfers with different style. Åsa is fantastic in her smoth movements and do topturns that you dont see beginners do. So do Robin but he needs more power and harder surf to show of. I am offcourse very impressed (as allways) of these two that do things that tok me long time to learn. Well I have got very little coaching until now when we decided to snap things up a bit…

Chris Hobson is a fantastic coach, I have meet him before when he has coached in Denmark so i knew a bit about him. Also Aterra now have a Ride Zenith in the fleet down in Peniche (Chris is one of the owners). I will write a review of the Zenith later. Bart Mattias and I get direct comments on our sessions and we try to change and do what Chris tells us to do. What i feel direct is that the speed increase pretty much and now I understand how some areal movements are done physically. Wow! But now we have to get use to the new speed so we can do the movements! To make a long story short we got an amazing week with Chris in Peniche. I hope i can go down soon again for some more practise… this will take some time to put together.

Next year we will continue the project and do more courses with Chris and other World Champion coches. Info you will find at later.

Two fantastic weeks are over and i am totally finnished laying in the sofa writing this! I have had so much fun so its enough for ten people. Thanks to Åsa and Robin for a fun and engaging week. And thanks guys, Bart, Mattias and Chris, amazing to meet you as usuall, looking so forward to next time, also nice to meet up with Edgar Duarte, Luis Pedro and the portugise champion Alberto Miguel. Thanks also David at Captains Log House who boiled my 8 min eggs perfect every morning! 😉 See you soon again!

Klittmöller 2016 big waves!

Posted by aterrakayak på 04 oktober 2016

The surfseason have started really nice this year. In all the years we have been in Klittmöller (since 2009) we have had small or bigger waves except for one year. This time  we got a low pressure from the west.  Good winds 3-4 days before the weekend got us the best conditions i have experienced in Klittmöller ever. Fantastic clean 1,5 m waves and sometimes even bigger.

If you are not experienced in waves maybe we should explain how a +1,5 m wave feels like. If you are at the top looking down just before it breaks it feels like over 3 meter. So if you think we are chickens take a ladder and climb up at the top and look down. There you get the feeling. Well i chicken out 3-4 times on the saturday, the moment when you know you that you are half a second to late on the wave and if you go you ”know” it will brake over you. Offcourse you regrett the decision just two seconds later and feel like a chicken…;)

On the breefing i count to 94 participants on this years DKF Surf Symposium! Fantastic! People from Denmark, Norway and Germany come to the event, yes and also 2 swedes. Me and PM Jönsson from Halmstad. I have to say it again, we are very welcome to the symposium. Lise, Jesper and David and rest of the team give us all such a big warm welcome and give so much joy and good vibes. Its not only waves its nice dannish ”hygge” with good food and a lot of smiling and talking.

This was the second year the had booked Chris Hobson as a coach for the more advanced surfkayakers. Chris Hobson will be at Aterras Surf Kayak Week in Peniche 5-11/11. Its great to have someone to look at you in this very technical sport.

My own shape wasnt the best, it was six months since i was in the Watertech Ona. And it was nervous for a start, but along the day you be more use to the wavehight and got more nice waves and better sessions. Its was a very nice fun day and the weather was so warm so i just used my 1 mm Black Teck shirt.

Day two it was the Dannish open, waves looked very small on the sunday but in the morning sessions it was surprisingly good around 2-3 fot. My body was full of soureness from the day before, arms, shoulder, abs and i was a bit suprised as i have had much paddling(surfski) in Sardinia. Though this is so much tougher and all this explosive moves you can only train in the reall environment. My qualifying heat was a disaster, on the second chance i got to semi final. There offcourse was the man who allways beat me Jesper Tilstedt (for the last time;)) and i didnt go through to the quarter. Impressing to see how well many of the guys do fine manouvers in these small waves. Its not easy i can tell you.

Hope to see YOU next year in Klittmöller the last weekend of september.

Thanks to the team Lisa, David, Jesper, Thisted Kayak Club, and all coaches and last but very important the kitchen staff.

Aterra Surfkayak course Peniche easter 2016…

Posted by aterrakayak på 10 april 2016

Monday 28/3… we arriwe to Cantino for our first day, gray skies, to much wind and not so clean waves. But we have our ”corner” for the begginers so they allways can have slow start. Though nothing is slow actually in the beggining. Four guys from 16 to 59. Some real begginer, one surfskipaddler, one experienced seakayaker and a tough young windsurfer. That was the line up for the week. At my side i had Mattias who help me to teach the guys.

Second day big waves, not a slow start for the guys and the second day is allways the hardest, third day nice sunny weather and waves that made the group happy. Day three makes things comes together and the participants start to surf for real. The last day was fantastic for us to see, many nice surfs and all give the last of the power they had left. Normaly we have one or two bad days, now it was the oposite. Well in a surfkayak we nearly allways can surf but sometime the wind is to strong.

Tuesday… The waves are big and clean we are at Prainha/Lagide. I go out take some warm up waves closer in, feels good. I paddle out through the brakes to the line up, long periods make it pretty easy to avoid the toughest brakes. Out there i search for the sweet spot to start in, allways difficult when its two systems comming in. Some bigger some smaller… I miss one wave turn back out and see this huge wall comming, paddle hard out for a few strokes to be in the right position, turn, shit one meters to late… the wave brake over me and give me a frontal 360, i come up and get thrown down again in another 360 now in cartweelpositon. Damn this wave have some power. I force out my paddle again and manage to come up again in front of the wave… backwards. Still the wave is fast and i surf in to the shore for some meters and feels that i have no real controll, try to turn the boat but flips again, i lean back hard and stick out the paddle, the wave kicks me up and i come up to the surface on top of the wave.

Adrenalin! Full of adrenalin i go out again in to the line up, relax a bit and get ready for the next ride. Start and ouch!, something is wrong with the shoulder, no power in the left stroke… I have been surfkayaking in 8 years now and this is my first injury. We are sometimes out in nasty conditions and what i want to say with this little story is that. If you want this is a super though sport but its also pretty safe and and in waves up to one meter its a very safe sport. One meter is nothing you may say… but its big for most people. Well i could surf the day after even if i didnt have the power and also we hade a fantastic time in Caparica on the Portoguise Championship.

Competition day, saturday! Fantastic to meet all the surfers some are really good top class surfers and its amazing to see them surf. Though the conditions was bad and got event bader during the day, to get nice waves you have to go out through heavy brakes if unlucky. Many didnt go all the way only the best. In my Q-heat i decided to start closer to the shore and take a look on what the others did. It felt ok got some surfs, nothing speciall but two of the others had big problem so i felt pretty sure to go to the final. In the final it was supernasty conditions but i had decided to go all in and the adrenalin tok care of the shoulderpain. Big strong Felipe Miguel was the guy to beat! I think i was close 😉 got one fantastic wave and some ok. But it wasnt enough, though i was happy for the second place and very happy to stay on the beach after the race. Felipe fliped in the end of the heat and had to take a loooong swim i tried to paddle out to him three times but didnt had any power left. Well after a while he was also safe on the shore. Mattias tok the third place!

Tuesday last day, the wind continues, we was out the day before and I surfed a bit without energy. This day the sun is shining but with hard winds. When we come down to Canthino the waves looks amazing. Mattias got out and as usuall he go straight to the biggest waves in the middle of all the surfers. Lucky i had the camera with me and could catch some of Mattias nice surfs, its so beautifull when all the peaces come together. Out there the waves felt sooo big, not so steap but long, so you had to cut back to get the speed. Fanstastic feeling when you feel that you have plenty of time to do the manouvers. I couldnt say i did a fantastic job out there (now it was time for Mattias to beat me) but got some nice clean waves. Tired, tired, happy, happy… thats was the feeling when we gave up…

Mattias do a 20 seconds surf

Interesting: On the two spots there was about 30 surfers when Mattias started his session, and i noted that Mattias surfed more waves than all these 30 boardsurfers did together! To note is that we allways try to give away many waves to keep the good feeling in the line up. This wasnt an easy day if you not are experienced as the waves was frightening high. I dont say that the less experienced boardsurfers shouldnt be there just mean that it was a bit hard to catch the waves for them. This was one of the best line ups i have been in, all in a row more or less, except for some lazy bastards that had to swim out in the surfzon…

Well to be a bit cocky… if you wanna surf, go kayaksurfing! 😉

Thanks to Peniche! Captains Log House: Linda, David, Ze and all the nice guests. To Mattias and offcourse to our participants Alex, Stefan, Jerker, Peter. Thanks to the Caparica team Manu and Ricardo and thanks to Ricardo for helping us.
